TODAY’S LESSON
Double Period
Mini - Lesson 1
(10 minutes)
Three Key Questions
after Reading a Text:
1) What does it say?
2) What does it mean?
3) What does it matter?

These are questions you can ask yourself,
and they are also good questions
for the Teacher Assistant to ask
during a discussion.

Let's read Ch. 8
and then do three sticky notes,
answering those three questions.

Mini - Lesson 2
(10 minutes):
Using a multi-layered time-line
to keep track of what happens
in a novel
First layer: What happened
Second layer: What questions do I have?
Third layer: What predictions can I make?

Today’s Lesson:
Questions for a Socratic Seminar

I'm hoping you will learn how to ask questions
that push your classmates to show their wisdom.

Have you learned how to ask good questions in the past?

Do you know someone who asks questions
that enable you to show your wisdom?

Why would a teacher teach by mainly asking questions?
Have you had a teacher who does this?

* In Notebooks,
Write Covered Topics In Margin.

TODAY’S LESSON
Double Period
Mini - Lesson 1
(10 minutes):
Using a "Character Bookmark"
to keep track of different characters,
what they look like
and how they behave.

I'm hoping you will learn today
about a good way to keep the characters
of any novel straight in your mind.

How did you keep track of characters last year?
How about in your fun reading books?
What are some techniques you have used?

On your bookmark,
each time something really new about a character is revealed,
write the page number and a brief note about it.

Let's practice it for a few minutes now,
recording the names of the chief characters
and the pages where they were first introduced.
Then, let's practice using the bookmark during silent reading today.

TODAY’S LESSON
Double Period
Mini - Lesson 2
(10 minutes):

5-second page summaries

See if you can do it!
Challenge yourself to make an accurate 5-second summary
of each page in TKAM.

Today I hope you learn
how important and easy it is
to write a good summary of a page in just 5 seconds.

Have you done this sort of thing before --
quick brief summaries of what you've read?

Let's do some 5-second summaries in class.

How did you do?

Today’s Lesson:
1) The 4-sentence recipes,
2) An impressive way to "present" your writing,
3) Impressive self-assessments.

Isn't it great to make a good impression on someone?
Think of a time when you wanted to make
-- and maybe did make --
a good impression.
How did it feel?

Today, I hope I can convince you of the importance
of making a good impression with your writing.
Make your essay so impressive
(especially the first part)
that a reader might say,
"Wow! This is a really impressive-looking piece of writing!"

What have you learned  in the past
about making a good impression with your writing?

Here's what wee will learn today:
How to write an impressive title, and subtitle, and heading.
How to use a recipe to carefully build
and opening and closing paragraph.
And how to write an impressive self-assessment.

We will click here for how to do a proper heading.
We will click here for how to write the 4-sentence recipe.
We will click here for how to do an impressive self-assessment.

 DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS?
